The DeKalb County Board of Education on Monday approved a partnership between the DeKalb County School District and Success for All, an innovative, nationally-recognized program that supports teachers and students and improves fundamental reading skills among learners at all levels.
The Success for All curriculum includes creative and engaging reading lessons, school-wide, 90-minute reading sessions, regular assessment of student progress and one-on-one tutoring for readers who need extra help. The program also provides extensive support and training for teachers, as well as steps to invite parents to participate and help their children learn.
Success for All offers technology that teachers can use to engage students in reading, and a web-based system to track student progress that is aligned to the new Georgia Common Core Performance Standards.
Success for All will be introduced in a selected group of DeKalb elementary and middle schools beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. Success for All will be primarily funded through a federal grant that will provide a full-time teacher facilitation, as well as instructional materials and support.
“Reading is the building block for learning and Success for All has shown solid results in improving student reading at all levels, from gifted students to the earliest learners,” said DeKalb County School District Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Atkinson.
“The name ‘Success for All’ means what it says. It provides the tools and support for students, teachers and parents to work together to improve student learning and success,” Dr. Atkinson added.
Success for All is managed by the Success for All Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development, evaluation and dissemination of research-proven reform models for preschool, elementary and middle schools, especially those serving many children considered at risk.
Success for All began in 1987 at Johns Hopkins University and currently serves approximately 1,000 schools in forty-six states.
